"Neighbors" -- AB United Way Virtual Storytelling Fundraiser

Welcome Back Neighbors!

Last year, we co-hosted a storytelling fundraiser with AB United Way just before COVID-19 hit. It resulted in a capacity crowd at Villageworks in West Acton and a good amount of money raised to help people in need in the local community.

This year, as our event is online, we’ll miss the intimacy of spending time together, but we are able to open this up to a whole new and much larger audience. Tell your friends, wherever they may be, that they’re in for a fabulous night of true stories told live. In addition to several hand-picked first timers, we’ll be bringing back some of our favorite award-winning, featured tellers. You’re in for a treat.

We’re thrilled to include Groton-native and MSNBC’s “chart-throb” Steve Kornacki as a storyteller this evening. Steve has received well-deserved accolades for his work at NBC’s “Big Board” where he shares election statistics in real time. We congratulate him on his new gig, working the big board for NBC’s NFL Sunday night games.

Our theme for the evening is “Neighbors.” Our featured tellers include:

Matthew Dicks
Matthew is a 41-time Moth StorySLAM champion and six-time GrandSLAM champion whose stories have been featured on its nationally syndicated Moth Radio Hour and weekly podcast. One of his stories has also appeared on GBH’s “Stories From the Stage.” He is an elementary school teacher and the internationally bestselling author of the novels Memoirs of an Imaginary Friend, Something Missing, Unexpectedly, Milo, and The Perfect Comeback of Caroline Jacobs. He is the founder and Creative Director of “Speak Up,” a Hartford-based storytelling organization. Matt loves ice cream cake, golf, tickling his children, staring at his wife, and not sleeping.

Sara Sweet Rabidoux-Kelsey
Sara is a Moth MainStage performer and a GrandSLAM champion. She is the Co-Founder of Blind Tiger Tellers and once ruined the perfect chance to meet her idol, Billy Joel. When she’s not bartending at Logan Airport, Sara creates reenactments of scenes from The Handmaid’s Tale with Barbie dolls for her fan art account, @OfkensTale on Instagram.

Wes Hazard
A comic, storyteller, and actor who has appeared on ABC & PBS television, GBH “Stories from the Stage” co-host Wes Hazard brings wit, energy, and honesty to the stage. Named one of Boston’s “Five Comics to Watch” by The Boston Globe, he’s been heard on the Risk! podcast, The MOTH Podcast, and is a three-time Jeopardy! Champion.

Katie Liesener
2016’s Massmouth “Big Mouth-Off” champion Katie Liesener has performed in more than 80 shows across eight states. She is a freelance journalist whose work has appeared in the New York Times, the Boston Globe, and other publications.

And some local storyteller:
In addition to Fugitive’s featured storytellers, a few friends of AB United Way will be sharing their stories: Christine Schuster, President & CEO of Emerson Hospital; Elizabeth Li, Acton-Boxborough Regional High School Student; and Boxborough’s own Vivek Kadambi.

Window opens at 6:45. Come early to chat with friends.
Event starts at 7pm.
Suggested donation $25 per person.

Thanks to these local sponsors, 100% of the ticket sales will support local community initiatives: Acton Pharmacy; Bisousweet Confections; Circle Furniture; Coughlin, Sheff & Associates, P.C.; Enterprise Bank ; Gallant Insurance Agency; National Grid; Northeast Auto Inventories ; Papalia Plumbing & Heating; Purveyor of Promotional Products; and Steinberg-Lalli Charitable Foundation.

POSTPONED: Vox One
Apr

7:30 PM19:30

POSTPONED: Vox One

Vox One’s evolution from talented Berklee College of Music students to one of the best vocal jazz a cappella groups in the world (and now Berklee professors, all) is one of rock solid jazz chops, experimentation, and a commitment to the music, the listener, and to each other. Members Jodi Jenkins-Ainsworth (soprano), Yumiko Matsuoka (alto), Paul Stiller (tenor/vocal drums), Paul Pampinella (baritone), and Tom Baskett (bass) have clearly honed their sound and their stage presence through the years, only improving with time.

Vox One has toured the US and internationally, opening along the way for Ray Charles, Chicago, the Persuasions, The Bobs, The Woody Herman Orchestra, and The Count Basie Orchestra. Jazz is in the DNA of all they do, but you’ll also hear elements of blues, funk, gospel, and folk. Beloved classics and sparkling originals are all done a la Vox One. While lush voicings and complex reharmonizations are stock in trade for the group, improv is also a staple of the Vox One show, where the group deftly creates full songs on the fly. Each improv is a one-time performance, something shared in the moment between audience and performers.

The San Francisco Examiner called the group “most adventurous and distinctive,” and Boston Magazine said, “This jazz quintet puts all kinds of throat sounds to such funky good use that listeners break into applause and — better — feel like dancing.”

Tom Baskett
Tom is regarded by colleagues and students for his dynamic and caring promotion of up-and-coming artists. His 30-year professional career includes credits for numerous international performances and productions in Africa, Asia, Europe and the U.S. His singing and speaking voice is heard in national and international TV, radio and web-based advertising, as well as popular artists’ recordings. At Berklee College of Music where he serves on the faculty, he mentors, coaches and directs students in creating performances which move hearts and inspire social change. Tom’s protégés includes vocalists appearing on The Voice, American Idol, and The Sing-Off, as well as major productions of Hamilton, The Color Purple, Motown: The Musical, The Lion King; and more.

Jodi Jenkins Ainsworth
Jodi is the soprano in Vox One. As a studio singer, she has been heard commercially across the US. She has done radio and television spots for TCBY, Sears, Mother’s Cookies and Boston.com and has done international spots for Meiji Confectionary Company, JOMO, Sony and Sharp. Jodi has been teaching private voice for over 20 years and is a professor in the voice department at Berklee. She specializes in Gospel, R&B, and Jazz. Jodi enjoys working as a clinician/adjudicator with various vocal jazz, a cappella groups and worship teams around the country.

Paul Pampinella
Baritone Paul Pampinella grew up singing. As a child, he made his way into New York City on a regular basis as a jingle singer, voicing some of the most popular television and radio ads of 1970’s and 80’s for Oreo, Burger King, Kit Kat, and more. A 1990 graduate of Berklee College of Music, Paul has been an Associate Professor in the Voice Department at Berklee since 2002. Paul toured extensively in the States and Japan with Vox One and Five O’Clock Shadow. Other projects have included recording and touring with Mr. Ho’s Orchestrotica, performing the compositions of Mexico’s “king of space age pop” Juan Garcia Esquivel. Paul also lends guitar and vocals to Boston’s Swing era Vintage Vocal Quartet and the contemporary rock duo Stack & Paul.

Paul Stiller
Paul is a graduate of Berklee College of Music and the University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire.  He has been on the Ear Training faculty at Berklee since 1995 and has taught Ear Training, Voice lessons, and a choral ensemble. He has opened for Stevie Ray Vaughn, Atlanta Rhythm Section, Dwight Yoakam, Ray Charles, Chicago, and the Woody Herman and Count Basie Orchestras. Commercial work includes Sears, TCBY Treats, State Farm Insurance, Hood Milk, Pontiac/GMC, Superior Coffee, International Trucks, Sharp, and Dr. Pepper. In 2012, Paul received the “Berklee Distinguished Faculty Award”, and the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire “2013 Alumni Distinguished Achievement Award.”

Yumiko Matsuoka
Yumiko, originally from Tokyo, Japan, is a graduate of Berklee and a professor in the Ear Training department and has also taught vocal writing in the Contemporary Writing and Production department. Matsuoka’s arrangements and compositions can be heard on all of Vox One’s albums, her anthology To Every Thing There Is A Season, and on recordings by other a cappella groups around the globe. Recent works include arrangements of the Beatles songs for Houston Chamber Choir, a composition celebrating the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death for Stile Antico (UK) and Folger Consort (Washington, DC), as well as chapters on a cappella arranging for A Cappella Perfect Book Advanced, published in Japan. Matsuoka has also written for Japanese TV commercials including Toyota, Sharp, Meiji Seika, and Japan Energy Corporation.

POSTPONED: ISABEL STOVER & FRIENDS

PLEASE NOTE THIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED DUE TO THE COVID-19 RESPONSE.

Isabel Stover (vocals)
Isabel is a seasoned vocalist who entertains and inspires listeners by fearlessly deconstructing musical compositions to their emotional core. “Jazz is my go-to music; my comfort food,” says Isabel. “As vocal artists there is a need to bear our souls to the world, but at the same time make our music accessible to people.” Her mastery of rhythm, phrasing and spot-on intonation draws the emotive thread between timeless jazz standards, latin favorites, and classic blues. Her laid-back style, ability to connect with her audience, and unique repertoire provides a refreshingly different jazz showcase. And the critics say: “Isabel Stover is a fantastic talent in the classic tradition of Carmen McRae or Sarah Vaughan who puts on a heartfelt, warm and vibrant show packed to the gills with soul.” “Isabel Stover has sung in musical theater, funk, r&b, classical opera, and a jazz choir. She certainly brings out the full meaning of songs in her richly textured voice.”

Treehouse Talk: Peacemaking & Positive Feedback Storytelling Event

Treehouse (http://www.treehouse.red/) is a network of GIVERS that empowers and inspires its members to take meaningful action via a series of small, invitation-only, nontraditional events. Since Treehouse members are givers, you are far more likely to get help from Treehouse than from any other business networking group. Join, return, and sponsor!

This event is a Treehouse Talk (for Treehouse members, prospective members, and the public), group storytelling in conjunction with Fugitive Productions (http://www.fugitiveproductions.com/previous-fugitive-stories-events) on the theme "peacemaking & positive feedback." Mingle, tell and/or experience 3-4 short stories, mingle again! Email us (info@house.red) if you'd like to tell your story!

ABOUT STORYTELLING: Hearing a true story live is fun, moving, and transformative. We are hard-wired, perhaps at a genetic level, to tell and listen to stories. Storytelling is an art form as old as humanity. It is the primary way that we relate to each other to create kinship and community. Humanity’s earliest stories were about survival, hope, loss, love, and courage. Today’s stories echo the same themes. Fugitive Stories presents "Moth-inspired True Stories Told Live" — non-competitive storytelling events in Acton, Concord, and Arlington. Our stories are told, not read, and are roughly five minutes long.

ABOUT TICKETS: Treehouse is free for attendees and is brought to you by the generosity of its sponsors. How it works:

WEEK 1 - Paid tickets go on sale (sponsors and donors). If you're seeing only paid tickets, then it's week 1!
WEEK 2 - If an event's costs ($40/person/event) are covered in week 1, then free tickets go on sale (attendees). If you're seeing free tickets, then it's week 2!

If sponsorship does not cover the cost of the event, then the event will be moved to the next time slot. Sponsors please note that (1) this event's date/location may change and (2) tickets are non-refundable. This page (and the number of available free tickets) is updated peridiocally, so check early and check often! This event is brought to you by the following:

DONORS (any amount)
- Lesley Leonessa (https://www.linkedin.com/in/lesley-leonessa-928ab012/).

BRONZE ($80/event)

TOMOKO IWAMOTO & 440 GYPSY JAZZ

7:30 PM19:30

TOMOKO IWAMOTO & 440 GYPSY JAZZ

“YO-KI SWING” CD RELEASE PARTYACTON — TOMOKO IWAMOTO & 440 GYPSY JAZZ

Features classic gypsy jazz tunes reimagined and fused with music from around the world. They provide us with warmth and beauty through “a jazz everyone likes.”

“Yo-ki Swing” is a collection of original music inspired by the gypsy jazz tradition of Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli, and fusing of music styles from around the world. The title tune “Yo-ki Swing” (“Yo-ki” means joy and mirth in Japanese) is a Klezmer-influenced, toe-tapping gypsy jazz tune, while “Bean Town,” is a swing-style song about our very own Boston. “Painted Lady,” a musette-style waltz, is about the white and black dotted orange butterfly, Vanessa Cardui. “Haboob” features percussion and chimes capturing a violent wind blowing in summer. “Lucky Seven” is a mainstream jazz tune written with just seven chords, and “Endless Stream” is a sentimental bossa nova tune. You might notice a little bit of Beethoven in “Moody's Waltz” and imagine a traveling gypsy caravan in “Gypsy Descent.”

Tomoko Iwamoto, a leader of 440, has been in Boston jazz scene for more than 25 years. Being a "jazzy" violinist with a strong classical background, she expanded her repertoire in jazz, rock, pop to world music, toured with Hypnotic Clambake, while studying Jazz Composition and Arranging at Berklee College of Music. During her recent trip to Europe, she jammed with world renown gypsy jazz musicians Tcha Limberger and the members of Les Violins de Bruxelles, and Chris and Julian Brunard. She appeared as a guest soloist with Mood Swings Orchestra and Women In World Jazz, and collaborated with local modern jazz guitarist, Chris Mcdermott.

Mark Chenevert has been playing clarinet and tenor sax in the Boston area for some 40 years now, working with various projects including Limbo Race ( 1982 WBCN Rumble winners ) , Willie Alexander, and Hypnotic Clambake. Currently , in addition to 440 , he works with the Hot Tamale Brass Band , David Champagne , Bertrand Laurence, and others . Learn more at www.markchenevert.com.

Jack Soref, graduate of Berklee College of Music, became captivated by the music of Django Reinhardt after attending the International Django Reinhardt festival in Samois-sur-Seine France. Jack spent half a year living in Paris France, where he jammed with the legendary guitarist Boulou Ferré and violinist Florin Niculescu. Jack can be seen regularly in the greater Boston area playing Django's music, with a myriad of local musicians. Out in the wider world, he has performed as an accompanist for Jazz Manouche luminaries including Joscho Stephan, Tim Kliphius, Gonzalo Bergara, Jason Anick, Olli Soikkeli, Adrien Moignard, Ben Powell, Aurèlien Bouly, and Titi Bamberger.

Sven Larson came to Boston in 1995 and began studying with bass virtuoso Steve Neil. He continued to learn, perform, and record in many genres, while becoming an in-demand bassist on the local jazz and blues scene. He has studied different styles of music including Hindustani Classical music and West African Drumming. Sven has played on many stages across the US, Canada, and Europe including Symphony Hall, Tanglewood Jazz Festival, and King Biscuit Festival. R.D. KING FEAT. LINDSAY STRAW & JORDAN SANTIAGO
Dec

R.D. KING FEAT. LINDSAY STRAW & JORDAN SANTIAGO

R.D. King is a Boston-based composer and acoustic guitarist extraordinaire. The winner of the 2017 Canadian Guitar Festival's International Fingerstyle Guitar Competition, King has opened for Andy McKee, Liz Longley, Ari Hest, and many others. His song "Lightness of Being" recently won the Instrumental category at the 2018 Walnut Valley Festival New Song Showcase. Listening to King’s music is an emotional and introspective journey that is difficult to parse into genre or tradition. King’s audiences describe his music as passionate, powerful, and deeply memorable. A graduate of Ithaca College School of Music, King performs at venues in New England and beyond, including TedX Cambridge, Boston Greenfest, the Spire Center, Walnut Valley Festival, Club Passim, and others. His debut album, vs. Self, was described as “energetic and epic” and “transformative journeys of sound” by New York Music Daily and The Deli magazine, respectively. His second album, R.D. King, was recorded with Antoine Dufour and was released in January 2019 under Candyrat Records.

Acoustic guitar & mandolin duo Lindsay Straw & Jordan Santiago create a sound defined by sparse, driving arrangements, adventurous improvisation, and love of tradition. Lindsay comes from a traditional music background, having spent years performing at Celtic festivals and playing in Irish sessions. She brings British ballads and Irish jigs and reels to the table. Jordan taps into his experience as a bluegrass and jazz musician, bringing American fiddle tunes, original material, and unrestrained vocal harmonies into the mix. Together, they seek to combine and express themselves through the best elements of their Celtic, bluegrass, and jazz languages.

Myanna, featuring Ken Clark & Eddie Scheer

Back for a return engagement. In November, Myanna, Ken, and Eddie performed at Orange Door resulting in one fan banging on the producer’s chest saying, “What’s happening here? How can we have just heard this in West Acton?” One of the hottest and most soulful saxophonists in the area, Myanna plays music that mixes jazz improvisation with funky rhythms, expressive playing, and catchy tunes. Her music has been described as funky, bluesy, rootsy, and spontaneous. In years past, she performed with the all-female band Lilith, then worked with the Bill Bellamy Project, followed by Girls’ Night Out. She has been playing with local favorite The Love Dogs since the ’90s. Myanna has recorded three CDs for the Bridge City label and has won awards for best jazz artist from both the “Boston Music Awards” and “The Boston Phoenix Readers Poll.”

They are as tight a cover band as you are ever likely to hear. Each, in turn, sings lead and their harmonies couldn’t be more spot on. And each is a talented instrumentalist.

Ali McGuirk at ODK

The 2018 Boston Music Award winner for “Blues Artist of the Year,” Ali McGuirk, has made a career of captivating audiences with her powerful, buttery voice and heartfelt songwriting. Her earliest years as a performer were spent earning residencies across four continents — from Santorini to Hong Kong.

In 2016, she was recognized by the Boston Globe as an “artist to hear,” along with Lake Street Dive, Haim, and other notables. In 2017, she released her first full-length album, “Slow Burn,” which was named on multiple year-end lists.

Her influences include Aretha Franklin, Amy Winehouse, Stevie Wonder, Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday, Donny Hathaway, Bill Withers, Nina Simone, Sheila Jordan, Bonnie Raitt, and Janis Joplin.

The Boston Globe wrote, McGuirk is “a soul singer who evokes comparisons to Amy Winehouse, but rocks even harder.” And The Improper Bostonian noted, “When [Ali] opens her mouth, people stop and take notice, captivated by her swooping, honeyed voice.”

“Fugitive at the Door” is a bi-weekly music series presented by Fugitive Productions and Orange Door Kitchen. Since the winter of 2015, Fugitive has been bringing great dance bands to The Gallery at Villageworks. Now, Fugitive is partnering with Villageworks’ newest venue, Orange Door Kitchen, to present “listening” music — one to a few performers playing jazz, folk, bluegrass, blues, classical, world music, possibly even a cappella. Whatever strikes our fancy — and yours.

“Fugitive at the Door” happens two Wednesdays a month. Orange Door Kitchen serves a few small plates and snacks each evening with a full bar. We think you will fall in love with the room and the amenities and hope that our Wednesday evening events offer a regular mid-week break for you.

Orange Door is a no cash, no tipping venue — all transactions are digital and gratuities are included in the menu price.
